A passionate gemstone enthusiast and seasoned business strategist, I blend my love for crystals with practical business insights.

Yes, Sodalite can go in water. But I do NOT recommend it since it can cause a lot of harm to the crystal.

Can sodalite go in water

One of the most common questions that I have come across about this crystal is that can sodalite go in water? Why can sodalite go or not go in the water?  We shall cover answers to these questions and much more about sodalite in this blog. Read on!

If you are a gemstone or mineral enthusiast and are fond of collecting them, you must have definitely considered getting your hands on a purple sodalite or blue sodalite.

Sodalite is a tectosilicate mineral and a part of the sodalite group. It is a royal blue coloured gemstone which makes it one of the most desirable crystals.

Can you put Sodalite in water? Guide to Sodalite and water connection

can you put sodalite in water

Sodalite has cracks in it which may not be visible to naked eyes. When it comes in contact with water, the cracks widen.

Since sodalite ranges between 5.5 to 6 on the Moh’s hardness scale, it is slightly on the harder side but is still fragile when dealing with water. It is neither a hard mineral nor a soft one thus putting it in the category of minerals that should not be brought in contact with water often.

As a rule, anything below 7 on the hardness scale should not be put in water. Hence, it is recommended to not put sodalite in water

Sodalite is one of those minerals that does not get affected by water immediately. However, soaking sodalite in water for a longer duration can impact the appearance of the mineral.

If you rinse sodalite gemstone under the running water for a couple of minutes and then pat them dry, it is not going to harm your mineral. Sodalite jewelry should not be put in contact with salt water as it can dissolve the stone.

Why should you not put Sodalite in water?

  1. Loses its natural shine
  2. The royal blue colour of stone starts fading
  3. Release toxic substances like aluminium
  4. Will dissolve in salt water
  5. Widens the cracks in stone
  6. Makes the stone fragile
  7. Makes sodalite dull
  8. Damage to the finish, chipping and cracking

There are many minerals that when coming in contact with water, start dissolving or lose their natural properties. While sodalite does not have such adverse reactions with water, they sure do get affected.

When sodalite comes in contact with water, they release toxic substances which can be dangerous and risky. In case you soak sodalite in water, it may start producing aluminium which is a hazardous element.

Throw the water away, rinse the stone thoroughly and wipe it dry. If you fail to dry it immediately, sodalite will lose its waxy texture.

When a sodalite stone is put in water, water seeps into the fine cracks of the porous stone itself. These water molecules start widening the cracks. These cracks may not be visible to our naked eyes. But someday if you happen to drop this stone, it might scatter into small pieces.

This will happen because the water molecules have made the stone very soft mineral fragile from the inside. This also changes the shine of the stone as now light will reflect differently from sodalite.

Prolonged contact of sodalite with water can reduce its brightness and the royal blue colour may start fading over time. If the gemstone contains other minerals that are likely to react with water, sodalite might even change in structure and appearance.

If you notice sodalite has been damaged due to exposure to water, you can cut off the damaged part and get the finishing done for the rest of the stone. This may help in getting back the natural colour and finish of the stone.

If you want to benefit from the positive energy of sodalite, it is important that it is cleansed and recharged frequently. If your sodalite becomes cloudy then it is time to cleanse it.

As sodalite cannot be put in water then how do you cleanse sodalite? There are multiple ways to cleanse and recharge sodalite without causing it any damage. Cleansing in the following ways will restore its true properties.

Cleanse Sodalite using sunlight

Sunlight is one of the powerful sources of energy. Like how humans need their daily sunlight dose, crystals can also be recharged using this source.

You can cleanse sodalite by keeping the stone under direct sunlight. This will help in restoring sodalite properties

Word of caution – Do not keep sodalite in direct sunlight for more than 2 hours. Direct sunlight for a longer period can cause the stone to lose its natural colour.

Cleanse Sodalite using moonlight

Moonlight is one of the most effective and safe ways to recharge sodalite. The feminine energy of the moon delicately cleanses the stone. You can place the stone near the window or outside so it’s directly under the moonlight. Let the stone remain like that overnight. Next morning, your stone will be recharged and ready to use.

Cleanse Sodalite using Amethyst

You can also use amethyst to recharge sodalite. Amethyst ranges around 7 on the moh’s hardness scale and is absolutely safe in the water. Thus, making it easy to recharge. You can place sodalite next to amethyst. This will help sodalite recharge with positive energy and restore its properties.

Can Sodalite go in Salt Water

Sodalite being a fragile crystal should not be placed in salt water. Sodalite has a hardness of less than 7 on moh’s hardness scale. This makes it not suitable for water exposure. Similarly, salt water is even more harmful to sodalite. The water and salt molecules widen the cracks in sodalite. This can lead to crystals getting dissolved.

However, salt can be used to cleanse sodalite. Place sodalite crystals in a container. Place this container in a bigger vessel that is filled with dry salt. Now the container with fluorescent sodalite crystals is immersed in a vessel filled with salts. This will ensure submerging sodalite crystals do not come in direct contact with salt but are also getting cleansed with positive energy.

Can sodalite go in Moon Water

Moon as we know has a very gentle energy that contains a massive superpower. For many crystals, moon water acts as an excellent cleaner. Getting water charged with moonlight is not very easy. Healers generally prefer doing so on a full moon day which doesn’t occur frequently.

Can sodalite go in this water? No. Sodalite cannot be immersed in moon water. Moon has a very powerful positive energy that cleanses many crystals. However, the composition of moon water remains the same as regular water. This makes it unsuitable for sodalite.

Can sodalite go in Bath Water

No, sodalite cannot be put in bath water. It is a fragile porous crystal that can crack due to exposure to regular water. Hence, it is recommended to not put the crystal in your bath water.

Crystals that range higher on moh’s hardness scale are generally used during baths. Many healers use these crystals in the bathroom to create soothing energy. These are also used during the spa to rejuvenate your mind and soul.

However, sodalite should be kept away from the bathing area. Steam and soap or any chemicals found in our bathroom can potentially harm the sodalite crystal. The steam creates a thin layer of water on the crystal which can widen the cracks. Hence it is important you keep your clean sodalite away from the bathroom area.

If wearing sodalite as jewellery, remove it outside the bathroom. Do not take it inside and place it on the slab. This might also harm the crystal.

Can you drink sodalite infused water

Sodalite is a gemstone that is in the category of fragile crystals or precious stones. Drinking sodalite-infused water can be poisonous. There are other gemstones that can be used for preparing the gem water.

How to prepare sodalite elixir

Elixir is a drink that is prepared in a way that it absorbs all the crystal healing properties of the gemstone. This, when consumed by individuals, can transfer the energy from gemstones to us. This drink helps in the healing powers to people and is said to be beneficial for health.

As we saw, sodalite cannot be brought in contact with water, a sodalite elixir cannot be prepared. Drinking water that had sodalite immersed in it can be dangerous and toxic.

However, there is an indirect way to prepare sodalite elixir.

Place sodalite crystals in an empty jar. Immerse this jar in a bigger vessel that is filled with warm soapy water. Make sure water does not seep into the jar with the healing crystals. Now place this vessel under morning sunlight or the moonlight overnight. This way water will be able to absorb positive energy and healing properties of sodalite.

Factors to evaluate before exposing your crystal to water:

Hardness of your crystal

The hardness of anything below 7 on moh’s hardness scale cannot be exposed to water. These crystals are fragile in nature. Water molecules can enter the crystal collection cracks and widen them.

Mineral composition of your crystal

The crystal should not contain elements that tend to react upon exposure to water. Reaction with water can release the natural properties of the crystal.

Colour of your crystal

The Colour of the crystal is important before you decide to immerse it in water. Some crystals lose their natural colour and shine and become dull.
