Aventurine is one of the most beautiful crystals that are a treat to the eyes. There has been a lot of debate and questions if aventurine can go in the water or not?

Aventurine is a form of Quartz that is found in multiple colours like blue, grey, yellow etc but is predominantly found in green colour. This crystal is found in multiple colours due to its composition. Due to this composition, the question of ‘can aventurine go in the water arises. While aventurine can go in the water, it is recommended to not put aventurine in water for longer durations. Putting aventurine in your drinking water should also be avoided.

Read further to find out details about its composition and what exactly makes aventurine unfit to go in the water. What is the best way to get the most benefits from aventurine and how to recharge and cleanse the crystal without the water.

Can aventurine go in water?

All crystals, gemstones or minerals can technically go in water but there are few exceptions where they tend to either dissolve or water makes them brittle by entering into the layers of the crystal. There are many factors that determine whether a crystal should go in the water or not like hardness, structure, impurities etc. Let’s now find out why aventurine cannot go in water.

The simple method to check for solubility of crystals in water is through Moh’s hardness scale. This scale gives the hardness and softness ranking. Any crystal with a hardness of more than 6 is good to go in the water. Aventurine ranges between 6-7 on Moh’s hardness scale which qualifies it to go in the water.

While the hardness scale makes it eligible to go in water, it is not recommended. This is why it is important to do research and study before putting your crystal in water. Aventurine comes in different colours due to multiple minerals being present in it.

The composition of aventurine is such that there are deposits of minerals present in the crystal. This gives them the varied colour that they are available in. These deposits present in aventurine may react with water and cause potential harm to aventurine. While Moh’s hardness scale makes it a hard crystal but it is not really that hard that it can take water.

Why can’t aventurine go in water?

Aventurine should not go in water. It is recommended to avoid long-duration exposure to aventurine in water. Since aventurine contains deposits, these might react with water and cause the crystal to break, dissolve or change colour. Saltwater can cause more harm than normal water as the flecks can react with water and salt to cause serious damage to the crystal.

Aventurine can dissolve

Aventurine may contain minerals that are not water soluble and when put in water, those minerals may react with water and begin to dissolve. If continued to do so, aventurine may break into pieces as the minerals inside might have dissolved.

Aventurine can crack

While many stones may look smooth with an even surface to naked eyes, many crystals and gemstones have cracks on the surface. These cracks are often not visible to our eyes. Almost all crystals have microscopic cracks and fissures.

If such crystals are put in water for a longer duration or frequently, water may seep into the cracks and over time make the crystal weak. The water gets into these cracks in a way that there is no way it can be wiped off or dried as these cracks are not visible to naked eyes.

Gradually, the cracks will start becoming wider. We may not be able to see this with our naked eyes because these cracks are too small but the stone will soon break into pieces due to the cracks.

Saltwater can cause more harm as minerals will react with salt and deepen the cracks further.

Permanent colour change of Aventurine or rusting

When aventurine is purchased, it is most likely to be polish coated. If the aventurine goes in water, the polish may start to fade which will cause the colour of the aventurine to become dull.

Crystals or gemstones mostly get their colour from the impurities and inclusions present in them. These inclusions are the ones that often react with water and cause damage to the aventurine.

Also, if your aventurine contains iron in it, this iron will react with water and form rust. Apart from damaging the crystal, rust will change the colour of the aventurine. The crystal begins to turn yellowish. If it becomes worse, it can also make the stone reddish or brownish. The visually appealing aventurine will now look dull and not as beautiful as it was.

In general, it is recommended against putting crystals in water. We may not know the exact composition of the crystal. Whether it has microscopic cracks or fissures, we may not be aware of it. Unless a test is done to find out the exact composition of the crystal, one may never know what minerals are present in it and how it may react with water.

The crystal may contain iron or mercury or copper. The stone may not necessarily depict the colour of the mineral. If it is not green, it does not mean that there is no presence of copper in it.

There could be many impurities in the crystal as well. When making crystal-infused water, this could become dangerous as you may not know if a reaction with water may make the infused water toxic.

Irrespective of the hardness of any crystal, keeping the stone soaked in water for extended periods can cause harm to the crystal by making it weak over time.

Aventurine cannot go in water for extended periods so soaking is not recommended. Even if one happens to wet the crystal, make sure it is wiped properly. The water has to be completely removed from small cracks. If failed to do so, water will remain there in the cracks and make them brittle which will cause breakage.

How to gain the benefits of aventurine?

Aventurine is from the family of quartz and contains many benefits. It possesses energies that the owner of the crystal can benefit from.

Aventurine has many energetic properties that make it an impressive stone. It is a crystal that provides comfort to the crystal holder. It is believed to bring good luck and good fortune.

Many healers use this crystal in the form of a necklace or bracelet. This way the crystal is closest to the skin and provides maximum benefits.

How to recharge aventurine?

Since aventurine cannot go in water, do not put aventurine in water for cleansing or recharging it. Using a non-water method to recharge is the best way to keep the crystal safe. Alternate methods can be used to recharge the crystal.

Using Moonlight

Using moonlight to recharge the crystal is one of the safest ways to recharge it. Leave the crystal under the moonlight overnight. Do this preferably on a full moon night. The next morning before sunrise, you may remove the crystal and bring it back inside. Your crystal is now ready to be used.

Using Sunlight

Aventurine can be placed under sunlight for recharging it. Place the crystal in a vessel and place it outside under the sun. Make sure it is not placed under direct sunlight for a longer duration. Remove the crystal after 30mins. Keeping crystals under direct sunlight for a longer duration can cause potential damage to the crystal.

Using other crystals

Aventurine can also be recharged using other crystals. You may place aventurine alongside other crystals. While doing so, bring all your focus and energy to this process to recharge the crystal. Keeping aventurine beside other crystals for a couple of hours can help recharge your stone.

In the case of a green aventurine, it can be placed in some place filled with greenery. This will give aventurine energy and recharge it.
