Are Crystals on Amazon or Shein Real? How to Tell
Crystals sold online range from genuine natural minerals to glass, plastic, and dyed cheaper stones misrepresented under a more desirable name. The risk is highest at very low price points and on marketplaces without strict gemstone listing policies. Knowing which stones are most commonly faked and running a few simple checks before or after purchase catches most substitutions.
How Widespread Is the Problem?
The crystal and gemstone market is largely unregulated for labeling. No governing body audits listings on general marketplaces. Sellers are expected to disclose treatments (heat, dye, irradiation) under FTC guidelines in the US and equivalent rules elsewhere, but enforcement is inconsistent for low-value decorative items.
The problem is not limited to any single platform. Fake crystals appear at every price point: dollar-bin tumbled stones, mid-range "healing sets," and higher-priced single specimens. The concentration of fakes is highest in:
- Amazon listings from new or unknown sellers
- Social media shops (Instagram, TikTok) without return policies
- Festival and fair vendor tables
- General merchandise retailers selling "crystal kits"
- Tourist markets and street stalls
Established specialist retailers — physical gem shops, established online gemstone dealers, members of gem trade associations — carry lower risk because their business depends on reputation built over time.

Stones That Are Most Commonly Faked
Turquoise: The most commonly misrepresented stone in the US retail crystal market. Dyed howlite or dyed magnesite is sold as turquoise at a fraction of turquoise's market price. Both are real minerals — howlite is calcium borosilicate hydroxide, Mohs 3.5 — but they are not turquoise. See turquoise for what the genuine mineral looks like.
Citrine: Most commercial citrine is heat-treated amethyst. This is a real stone (silicon dioxide, Mohs 7) that has been transformed by heating from purple to orange or reddish-orange. The practice is widespread and accepted in the gem trade when disclosed, but it means buyers may be receiving a very different product from natural citrine. Rose quartz: Pink glass is sold alongside genuine rose quartz in bulk bins. Glass and rose quartz can look similar in tumbled form.
Lepidolite: Purple-dyed quartzite or purple quartz glass is substituted for genuine lepidolite, which is a distinct mica mineral with a layered, flaky texture visible under magnification.
Amber: Plastic copal mimics amber. Young copal resin (tens of thousands of years old, not millions) is sold as amber. The distinction matters for price; both have similar appearances.
Black obsidian / black glass: Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass; manufactured black glass is sold alongside it. Distinguishing them requires specific gravity measurement or detailed magnification.
Crystal healing sets with many stones at very low prices: A set advertising 20+ named stones for $15 to $25 does not contain what the labels claim. At that price, the beads or tumbles are glass, plastic, or dyed common minerals.
Eight Tests to Check Authenticity
No single test is conclusive for all stones. Use two or more together.
1. Temperature check Hold the stone against your inner wrist for 10 to 15 seconds. Real minerals stay noticeably cool because stone conducts heat away from the skin more slowly than glass warms to it. Glass reaches skin temperature within a few seconds; plastic warms even faster. Quartz-family stones remain cool for 30 or more seconds.
Limitation: some real minerals warm faster than others. Use this as a quick first screen for glass and plastic.
2. Weight and density Genuine gemstones are typically denser than glass or plastic of the same apparent size. Hold the suspect stone alongside a confirmed genuine stone of similar size. A glass or plastic fake feels noticeably light for its size. Real hematite is visibly heavy; plastic hematine (the common substitute) is not.
For any stone costing over $50, look up its published specific gravity on Mindat and test it by weighing the stone on a scale and measuring water displacement.
3. Inclusions under magnification A 10x jeweler's loupe ($10 to $25) is the most useful single tool for checking crystals. Glass fakes show rounded gas bubbles trapped inside — a product of molten material cooling. Real crystals show natural inclusions: needle-like rutile fibers, fracture planes, growth tubes, and two-phase liquid-gas inclusions.
Perfectly clear stones at low prices are suspicious. Most natural clear quartz has at least minor veiling or fractures visible at 10x magnification. Glass is more consistently clear and may show swirl flow patterns from cooling.
4. Price check against market rates If a price is dramatically below the known market range for a stone, it is almost certainly not what it claims. Research realistic prices from established retailers or published price guides before buying.
A tumbled piece of genuine rose quartz can be $2 to $8 at a reputable retailer; genuine natural citrine in any significant size costs considerably more than heat-treated. "Natural alexandrite" under $100 per carat does not exist at commercial quality. Use price as a first-pass filter.
5. Acetone (nail polish remover) dye test for howlite/turquoise Dampen a cotton ball with acetone and rub it firmly on an inconspicuous back surface of a stone sold as turquoise. If blue-green dye transfers to the cotton, it is dyed howlite or magnesite. Real turquoise does not bleed.
Use only on the back surface; acetone can damage some surface treatments.
6. UV light fluorescence Many real gems fluoresce specific colors under longwave UV (a $10 UV flashlight). Amber fluoresces pale blue-white; many diamonds fluoresce blue. The response is species-specific: learn what a particular stone should do before drawing conclusions. Absence of fluorescence is not proof of fake; it is only useful when you know what to expect for a given stone.
7. Scratch and hardness test The Mohs scale predicts what a stone can and cannot scratch. Real quartz (Mohs 7) scratches glass (Mohs 5.5). A glass bead sold as quartz will not scratch a steel knife blade (Mohs 5.5 to 6.5). A hardness pick set ($15 to $30) allows testing specific values on an inconspicuous surface.
Common benchmarks: a copper coin is approximately Mohs 3; a steel knife blade is approximately Mohs 5.5; a hardened steel file is Mohs 6.5. A genuine quartz-family stone at Mohs 7 scratches a glass plate. A glass substitute will not.
8. Seller transparency test Ask the seller three questions before any purchase over $40: What country does this stone come from? Has it been treated (heated, dyed, irradiated, or fracture-filled)? What is your return policy? A legitimate seller can answer the first two specifically and will have a written return policy. Vague answers or resistance to treatment questions are warning signs.
When to Use a Professional Gemological Lab
For any stone you are considering buying at over $300, or after a purchase of that value if the seller has a return window, request a laboratory report from an independent gemological lab (GIA, IGI, Gübelin, AGL). Lab reports cost $50 to $300 depending on the stone and service; for expensive stones they are consistently worth the cost. The report will confirm species, origin (for some stone types), and treatment history.
What "Treated" Actually Means
A treated stone is not automatically a fake. Most gemstones on the market have undergone some treatment:
- Heat treatment: Changes color. Heat-treated amethyst becomes citrine; heat-treated sapphire and ruby are the norm in retail. Disclosure is required; the stone is still a real mineral.
- Dyeing: Color added by dye. Dyed howlite as turquoise is a misrepresentation; dyed agate sold accurately as dyed agate is disclosed and acceptable.
- Fracture filling: Resin or glass fills surface cracks. Common in emerald. The stone is still genuine emerald; the fill stabilizes it. Disclosure required.
- Irradiation: Changes or enhances color. Used in some blue topaz and other stones. The stone is still the named mineral; disclosure required.
A stone is only a fake when it is represented as something it is not. A real stone with undisclosed treatment is a case of seller deception, not a fake stone.
