Sapphire vs Tanzanite: Key Differences Explained

Sapphire and tanzanite can overlap closely in blue-violet color, but they are very different gemstones. Color and Optical Effects

Blue sapphire ranges from light cornflower blue through medium to dark velvety blue. The most prized sapphires are a strong, saturated blue without being too dark. Sapphire is weakly dichroic, showing slight color variation between two viewing directions, but this is subtle in most finished gems.

Tanzanite is strongly trichroic, meaning it shows three distinct colors depending on the viewing direction: blue, violet, and a burgundy or reddish-brown. Cutters orient the stone to show the preferred blue or violet face-up. This strong pleochroism is one of tanzanite's most distinctive identifiers and the source of its shifting, velvety appearance under different light sources — it often appears more blue in daylight and more violet under incandescent light.

The two stones can be indistinguishable in a photo. In person, tanzanite's color-shift quality and the visible violet component usually distinguish it from a pure-blue sapphire, though blue-violet sapphires can confuse the comparison.

Hardness, Durability, and Cleavage

Sapphire at Mohs 9 has no cleavage and excellent toughness — it is one of the most durable gem minerals available and is appropriate for all jewelry types, including everyday rings. The Mohs hardness scale puts sapphire's durability in full context.

Tanzanite at Mohs 6–7 is softer and, critically, has distinct cleavage in one direction. Cleavage is a plane of structural weakness; a sharp blow in the wrong direction can cleave the stone. Combined with fair to poor toughness, tanzanite is considered suitable for earrings, pendants, and occasional-wear rings with protective settings, but not for daily ring wear. Chemistry and Origins

Sapphire is the non-red variety of corundum (the red variety is ruby). Blue sapphire gets its color from trace iron and titanium. Tanzanite is the blue-violet gem variety of the mineral zoisite. All commercial tanzanite comes from a single mining area — the Merelani Hills near Arusha in northern Tanzania. This geographic concentration makes tanzanite supply vulnerable to mining disruptions and political change in ways that sapphire's multi-source supply is not. The name "tanzanite" was introduced by Tiffany & Co. in 1968 when they began promoting the stone commercially.

Treatments

Both stones are almost universally treated in commercial trade.

Heat treatment of blue sapphire is standard practice, used to improve color and clarity. Reputable dealers disclose treatment status; a GIA or other laboratory report states whether a sapphire is heated or unheated. Unheated sapphires at fine quality carry a meaningful price premium.

Virtually all commercial tanzanite is heated, typically to around 400–600 °C, to convert a brownish tint in the rough into the characteristic blue-violet color. This treatment is universally accepted in the trade and is considered permanent and stable. The few pieces sold as "unheated tanzanite" are primarily collector items.

Price and Rarity

Fine blue sapphire spans an enormous price range based on color, clarity, origin, and treatment status. Commercial heat-treated stones are accessible at moderate prices per carat; fine unheated Kashmir or Burma sapphires are among the most expensive colored gems available.

Tanzanite is rarer in one sense — it has only one source — but the deposit has historically produced substantial quantities, and commercial quality material is more affordable than comparable sapphire. The supply will eventually be exhausted, and this finite nature is often cited as a long-term value argument. Pricing depends heavily on the blue-to-violet ratio, depth of color, and clarity.

How to Tell Them Apart

Gemologically, the distinction is straightforward:

  1. Refractive index: Sapphire measures 1.762–1.770; tanzanite measures 1.691–1.700. These ranges do not overlap; a refractometer separates them definitively.
  2. Specific gravity: Sapphire (~4.00) is noticeably heavier than tanzanite (~3.35) for the same size stone.
  3. Pleochroism: Tanzanite's three strong colors (blue, violet, burgundy) viewed through a dichroscope are distinctive; sapphire shows only two.
  4. Hardness: A scratch test is not appropriate on finished gems but is useful for rough.

Choose tanzanite if you are drawn to its distinctive color-shift quality, want a stone from a single, defined origin, and intend to wear it in a protective setting with occasional use rather than daily ring wear. Tanzanite's finite supply from one location gives it a different investment profile from sapphire's multi-source market.
