Moonstone vs Opal: Key Differences Explained
Moonstone and opal both show internal light effects, but by entirely different mechanisms and with different physical properties. The Optical Effects: Adularescence vs Play of Color
Moonstone's adularescence is a soft, billowing light that appears to float beneath the surface and move as the stone or viewer moves. It is caused by light scattering between alternating thin layers of orthoclase and albite feldspar within the crystal structure. The effect is typically white, blue, or silver; the highest-quality moonstones show a vivid blue adularescence over a colorless or near-colorless body. Opal's play of color is a more dramatic effect: flashes of spectral light (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet) that shift with viewing angle. This is caused by diffraction of light as it passes through a regular, three-dimensional grid of silica spheres within the stone. Larger, more uniform spheres produce red and orange colors (rare and prized); smaller spheres produce blue and violet. Black opal, in which dark body color creates high contrast against the color flashes, commands the highest prices in the opal market.

Hardness, Cleavage, and Daily Wearability
Neither stone is among the hardest gems. Moonstone reaches Mohs 6–6.5 but has two directions of perfect cleavage, which means a sharp impact in the wrong direction can split the stone. Moonstone is appropriate for earrings and pendants; rings require a protective setting and should be removed for manual tasks.
Opal is Mohs 5–6.5 (the wide range reflects variability between opal types). It has no cleavage but its lower hardness means it is vulnerable to scratching in everyday use — quartz dust (Mohs 7) in the air can abrade opal surfaces over time. Opal and Water: A Special Consideration
Opal contains water — between 3 and 21 percent by weight, depending on variety. This creates two care concerns. First, prolonged immersion can cause opal to absorb water and swell slightly, potentially disrupting the internal sphere structure and dulling play of color. Second, extreme dryness or rapid temperature change can cause crazing: a network of surface cracks that permanently damages the stone. Opal should not be stored in airtight containers without humidity control in very dry climates, and should not be subjected to ultrasonic cleaners or steam.

Opal Doublets and Triplets
A significant buyer caution applies to opal specifically. A substantial portion of opal jewelry on the market uses doublets or triplets — thin slices of precious opal cemented to a backing (doublet) and then covered with a clear dome of quartz or glass (triplet). These are not solid opal and can be damaged by immersion in water, which can work into the adhesive layer and cloud the stone. Doublets and triplets should be clearly disclosed at point of sale.

Treatments
Moonstone is generally sold without treatment in commercial practice. Occasionally, surface coatings are applied to enhance adularescence, but this is not standard trade practice.
Opal treatments are more varied. Impregnation with resin or polymer is used on some lower-quality material to improve stability and luster; this is permanent but should be disclosed. Smoke treatment is used to darken the body color of some opal. Doublets and triplets (described above) are not treatments of the stone but assembled products. Ask specifically whether a piece is solid opal or an assembled product before buying.
Price Drivers
Moonstone pricing depends on body color (colorless or white base preferred), adularescence color (blue is most valued), quality of the optical effect, and country of origin. Fine blue adularescent moonstone from Sri Lanka is the most prized commercially.
Opal pricing varies enormously by type and quality. Australian black opal from Lightning Ridge is the most valuable opal type per carat. Crystal opal and white opal from Coober Pedy are widely available at more moderate prices. Ethiopian Welo opal has become commercially prominent since the 2000s. Boulder opal prices depend heavily on the proportion of color to ironstone matrix. The gap between common opal (low value) and fine black opal (extremely high value) is wider than for most gem materials.

Both stones carry long traditions in crystal practice. Moonstone is traditionally associated with intuition, emotional balance, and the lunar cycle; it is frequently used by practitioners seeking to support what they describe as inner clarity and feminine energy. These are cultural and spiritual traditions, not documented physiological effects.
Opal is traditionally linked with creativity, inspiration, and emotional expression. Its shifting play of color is often interpreted in spiritual traditions as representing the full spectrum of human experience. Historical European superstition once associated opal with bad luck; this belief is not shared across cultures and is not reflected in Eastern or Indigenous Australian traditions.
Which to Choose
Choose moonstone if you want a crystalline, generally untreated stone with a soft, rolling glow. Its adularescence is subtle and elegant, and it carries less care complexity than opal (no water content, no doublet concern).
Choose opal if you want dramatic spectral color flashes and are willing to learn opal-specific care requirements. Ensure any opal purchase is clearly disclosed as solid or assembled, and choose a setting that protects the stone from impact.
